The Illustrated Candle includes a fragrance heat diffuser.
Instructions on using it are provided below.
USING THE FRAGRANCE HEAT DIFFUSER
- Fragrance oil is not blended with the candle soy wax. So your choice of fragrance is not limited to the few normally available from any single candle vendor.
- You can also change the fragrance (between burns) during the life of the candle and experiment with alternative fragrances and blends.
- You must use a non water-soluable 100% pure fragrance oil. These are usually specified as suitable for making candles and for use in diffusers.
- These are highly concentrated so take care to avoid any skin contact and wash immediately with water and detergent if this occurs.
- The fragrance heat diffuser provided is a 6mL capacity borosilicate glass tube attached to the wall of the container using high temperature glue.
- This can be filled, before lighting the candle, with water and fragrance oil, using the plastic dropper included with the candle or using one from a fragrance bottle as shown in the picture above.
- The plastic dropper can also be used to empty the diffuser and to change the fragrance between burns.
- The diffuser can otherwise be left empty if heat diffusion of fragrance is not required.
- When used it should only be filled when the candle is cool and while the candle is unlit, first with 2 to 3 mL of fragrance oil, and then with water to bring the level up to about 5mm below the top of the tube. The fragrance oil will rise to the top and will not mix with the water.
- Do not overfill the tube as this may spill the inflammable fragrance oil onto the candle surface. Remove any spillage with a tissue before lighting the candle.
- Never use pure fragrance oil as this creates a fire risk.

- The fragrance throw will start when the melt pool approaches and begins to warm the diffuser tube and will increase as the candle burns down and the temperature within the container increases.
- Fragrance oils / essential oils are available from many online sources: Amazon, AliExpress, eBay and SHEIN, are just a few. If you do not already have your own selection some links to purchase suitable fragrances are provided below.
- You can use any fragrance oil on the market that is 100% pure and not water soluable. These are usually specified as suitable for diffusers and making candles.
- We recommend you first try a selection of small quantities of oils and then standardise on those that give the best results in your environment and ambient conditions.
- Only use oils approved for candle making or heat diffusers. These should not have a flash point below 65°C and must not be water soluable versions.
- Fragrance oils can also be mixed to create your own blends.
- The volume of fragrance oil may drop during the life of the candle. If a reasonable volume of oil remains when the candle has burned down fully it can be transferred to a new candle using the dropper supplied. If only a small volume remains and the scent throw has stopped this may be only carrier oil and should be disposed of.
- Before each burn you can top up the fragrance oil or water levels as required but keep the liquid level >= 5mm below the top of the diffuser tube. Do not overfill.
- As the candle burns down you will be able to see the boundary between the fragrance oil and the water in the tube.
- If the fragrance liquid level has not dropped appreciably but the fragrance is no longer apparent then the fragrance you are using may not have been pure fragrance oil but mixed with carrier oil. In which case extinguish and cool the candle and then replace all the liquid in the diffuser with a fresh sample of fragrance and water using a slightly larger volume of the fragrance liquid.
- As the wax melt pool gets lower the liquid temperature in the diffuser will increase, depending also on the ambient temperature of the room.
- Stop burning the candle and trim the wick or empty the diffuser if the melt pool level falls below the bottom of the diffuser tube and / or the flame or wick is approaching the tube and heating it excessively.
- Using the container candle inside a glass candle enclosure is not recommended as the enclosure limits the fragrance output. It also increases the operating temperature potentially further reducing the fragrance output.
- In the unlikely event of the diffuser tube becoming detatched from the container wall extinguish the candle and remove the diffuser tube from the container before re-lighting. This will never happen before the candle is almost fully burned down and only then if the candle has previously been dropped or damaged.
